Suriname is a small, multilingual country on the northeast coast of South America, and its immigration system is built around a clear split between residence and work. If you are not Surinamese, you generally need a residence permit first, and then a separate work permit if you intend to take up employment.

Suriname taxes individuals who live in the country on their total net income, while people who do not live there are taxed only on Surinamese-source income. The income tax rules set out a progressive structure with a tax-free band at the bottom, and a solidarity levy applies above a certain threshold. Immigration and tax are separate: a residence or work permit does not by itself determine your tax position, and the records do not describe any special treatment of foreign-source income for newcomers.
