**Renewal: Renewable, 5 years max**

Under the Immigration and Deportation Act the permit can be extended up to five years from the date of issue. Your employer applies for the extension.

**Permanent residence: After 10 years of residence**

You can apply for a Residence Permit, which confers permanent residence, after holding an Employment Permit for a continuous period of more than ten years.

**Citizenship: Time here doesn't count**

Citizenship by registration needs ten continuous years of ordinary residence, and the Citizenship Act counts only time as a Residence Permit holder. Years on this permit do not count until you hold a Residence Permit.

You must stay outside Zambia until the permit is approved, and only your employer, a practising lawyer or an immigration consultant can apply for you.

#### Stay
