## Tax

For income tax, Peru distinguishes between domiciled and non-domiciled individuals. The tax-domicile rules in the Código Tributario are separate from this.

Standard rules

### [Peruvian income tax: domiciled and non-domiciled individuals](https://settleanywhere.com/countries/peru/tax/#tax-pe-domiciled-worldwide)

Progressive rates

**Details**

- Limit: PEN 5,500/yr ≈ $1,600

A foreigner who has lived or stayed in Peru for more than 183 calendar days in any 12-month period is domiciled and taxed on worldwide income; until then the foreigner is non-domiciled and pays income tax only on Peruvian-source income, at a flat 30% on employment income (Article 54), without the 7 UIT deduction or the progressive scale.

#### Taxed on

Peruvian-source income for non-domiciled individuals; labour income of non-domiciled individuals is taxed at 30% (Income Tax Law art. 54 g).

#### Who it applies to

- Domiciled: a foreign individual who has resided or stayed in Peru more than 183 calendar days during any period of 12 months (Income Tax Law art. 7 b).
- Non-domiciled: a foreigner who has not passed that mark.
- A domiciled person who cannot prove residence in another country stays domiciled until absent from Peru for more than 183 calendar days within any 12-month period.

#### Exclusions

- Foreign-source income of non-domiciled individuals is outside Peruvian tax.

#### Limits

- PEN 5,500 a year (≈ $1,600) · Value of the UIT for 2026; domiciled labour income is taxed on an 8% to 30% scale expressed in UIT, while non-domiciled labour income pays a flat 30%.

#### Days in the country

- More than 183 days in any 12-month period · Residence or stay in Peru of more than 183 calendar days makes a foreign individual domiciled (art. 7 b).

#### Tax residence

The absence test (more than 183 days away in any 12 months) is how a person who is already domiciled loses that status; it is not the test for a new arrival.

#### Visas

No visa quality sets the tax domicile.

#### Other taxes

VAT and social contributions not covered.

## Arriving in Peru: first steps

1. Check which resident visa route fits your situation and gather the required documents before applying from abroad.
2. Arrange health cover for your stay, as the records do not list public health registration as part of the visa process.
3. Keep proof of how your money enters Peru through a bank supervised by the SBS if you are applying as a rentista.
4. For work or investment routes, make sure your contract or investment proof meets the specific requirements, including any labour-authority approval.
5. If you are a student, prepare the criminal-record certificate and, if a minor, the sworn declaration of economic solvency signed by a parent or guardian.
6. Remember that your visa status and your tax domicile are separate; track your days of presence in Peru for income tax purposes.
